Other awards (2000-2022)

In 2000, the Club introduced the Club Championship Competition, based essentially on the degree of participation in Club activities.

Five categories were designated – namely, Club Champion, Chapter Champions, Teams Champion, New Member Champion and Social Champion – although at the end of the year, awards were only made in the first four categories. The award of Social Champion was replaced by a perpetual trophy for “Outstanding Achievement Award”, which in turn was replaced in 2008 with the Jinba Ittai Award.

The Award for Club Champion was renamed the Mike Quist Award in 2011 in honour of the memory of Mike Quist. Mike was the National Public Relations Manager for Mazda Australia in the 1980s and 1990s; he oversaw the launch of the Mazda MX-5 into Australia in 1989, and his marketing plan included the establishment of an MX-5 owners’ club in every mainland state – which he achieved with the help of his deputy Sue Ransom (starting with the Victorian Club in May 1990) and Alan Horsley (in NSW).

Unfortunately, all of these awards, except for the Jinba Ittai Award (which is awarded by the Club President), were discontinued in 2022.
